10th Anniversary of National Apprenticeship Week!

This year, the 10th annual National Apprenticeship Week highlights the dedication and growth of individuals pursuing skilled trades careers. One example within the RSG International group is Hayden McGill, a Technician Apprentice at Powell Contracting. With over two years of experience, Hayden showcases how apprenticeships can lay the foundation for a fulfilling career.

Background and Motivation

A passion for hands-on work drove Hayden's journey to becoming a technician apprentice. Before starting his apprenticeship, Hayden spent much of his free time working on his truck. This interest in mechanical work, combined with a desire to pursue a "red seal" certification, led him to explore becoming a technician.

"I wanted to get a red seal in something, and my girlfriend pushed me to pursue a technician apprenticeship," says Hayden. The opportunity came through his girlfriend’s mother, Kelly Archibald, who works at PGC Services. After learning that Powell Contracting was looking for an apprentice, Hayden applied and has been with the company ever since.

Experience and Learning

For Hayden, the most rewarding part of his apprenticeship has been solving complex problems. "When I figure something out—especially those more difficult problems that take a few hours to solve—it feels really rewarding," he shares. This hands-on problem-solving is at the heart of his apprenticeship experience, as each day brings new challenges that require creativity and persistence.

In addition to solving problems, Hayden has developed a wide range of technical skills during his time at Powell Contracting. He's learned to perform inspections on heavy equipment, work on hydraulic lines, and maintain crucial components like crane outriggers.

"I'm learning from everyone in the shop," says Hayden. "Lenny teaches me about the auger trucks and how they work, and Tyler has taught me a lot about crane inspections and hydraulic systems." His mentors have played a pivotal role in shaping his skills and understanding of the trade.

Challenges and Growth

As with any apprenticeship, Hayden has faced challenges along the way. One of the biggest hurdles has been the time required to complete tasks. "Some jobs can take longer than expected, but you just have to stick with them and not give up," Hayden reflects. The combination of learning and working can sometimes feel slow, but perseverance has helped him push through.

Balancing his apprenticeship with personal interests has also been important to Hayden. As someone who enjoys working on his diesel truck, he finds time outside of work to continue building his mechanical knowledge. This passion for vehicles not only fuels his apprenticeship but also helps him maintain a healthy balance between his professional and personal life.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Hayden has clear goals for his career. "After completing my apprenticeship, I’d like to get my AZ license, which would allow me to drive heavy equipment on the roads," he shares. This ambition to expand his skill set aligns perfectly with his long-term career goals, and he is confident that his apprenticeship at Powell Contracting will help him achieve them.

Advice for Future Apprentices

For those considering an apprenticeship, Hayden has some straightforward advice: "It’s worth it. If you enjoy working on trucks or hands-on work, go for it." He emphasizes that apprenticeship experience is a great way to gain practical skills, work alongside experienced professionals, and secure a future in a skilled trade.

Support at Powell Contracting

Hayden has found Powell Contracting to be incredibly supportive throughout his apprenticeship journey. The company has been flexible with his schooling, allowing him to complete the necessary portions of his training while balancing work responsibilities. With a supportive environment and a strong network of mentors, Hayden has been able to thrive as an apprentice.

The Road Ahead

As Hayden nears the completion of his apprenticeship, he looks forward to taking his licensing test and becoming a fully licensed technician. As Apprenticeship Week shines a spotlight on skilled trades, we celebrate individuals like Hayden McGill who are not only developing the skills of today but also preparing for the future.
